1.20.22 | Volume 3 No. 5

Dear Alumnae,

Happy new year from all of us in the Alumnae Office. We hope the arrival of the new year comes with a sense of optimism for better days ahead. With the emergence of Omicron, it has felt as though we are rewinding the clock; nevertheless, two weeks ago, when our students returned to Mount Ida from across the globe, we were ready and eager to welcome them back! They are energized by the opportunity to continue in-person learning and to strengthen their connections with each other. Stay tuned for opportunities and ways to make connections within our alumnae community; we have plans for virtual and in-person gatherings in the months to come, and have already started planning for Reunion Weekend at Mt. Ida in June!

It is my hope that you and your family are navigating the beginning of 2022 in good health and happiness.

With gratitude,
Margaret Clark '98

Celebrating the Legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

The Emma Willard Campus Community celebrated the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. by dedicating the entire day of programming to our first black graduate, Anne Spencer Thurman, class of 1950. Anne’s father, Howard Thurman, was a trusted advisor and friend of Dr. King. The day was filled with workshops, including one led by history instructor Drew Levy honoring Dr. Thurman’s contributions to the struggle for racial justice. The day concluded with a virtual alumnae panel discussion titled, “Our Voice: The Journey After Emma.” Led by two student moderators, our alumnae panelists shared insights from their career-and-life journeys since their days at Emma Willard. Students and alumnae gathered for an hour to discuss what it means to be an inclusive community, and how to create connections to foster a strong sense of belonging. We are deeply grateful to our alumnae panelists for spending time with us for this special moment. Learn more about the exceptional alumnae panel below who gathered for the celebration. Growing Our Awareness

The Emma Willard School community recently had the opportunity to learn from Harvard Professor Mahzarin Banaji, PhD, who has conducted extensive scientific inquiry into the parts of our brain that guide behavior and are hidden from our conscious mind. Her virtual presentation to students, parents, and alumnae acts as a catalyst for reflection and continued work on equity and inclusion in our community.

Acting in Community: YouthFx Intensive

Last month, two Emma Willard School acting students finished up a six-week program at the YouthFX Open Lab. Manyi L. ’23 and Evangeline W. ’23 attended weekly sessions after school, collaborating with peers and professionals in the industry to learn almost every step of the creative theatrical process.

Emma News: A Year in Review (2021)

2021 was a year of many firsts, deep reflections, and incredible celebrations. While we have collectively battled against the odds, together we have come out victorious. Join us in remembering a few of our favorite memories from the last year!

Looking back at Revels 2021

The class of 2022 put on an exceptional Revels in December. Due to the pandemic, we made the tough decision to limit audience capacity this year. The good news is that we still had a few young alumnae who were invited by their friends and sisters in the class of 2022 and we managed to capture a few photos.
